HILO, Hawai'i — Fire officials planned to search one more day today for a missing 12-year-old Waimea boy who disappeared Saturday evening while fishing with family members on the south Kona Coast.
Alexander DeRego was fishing with his brother and uncle, and was last seen at a popular spot known as "The Rock in the Water" near Kealakekua Bay about 8 p.m.
Searchers near Ka'awaloa Point on Sunday found a dive light in 20 feet of water that DeRego had been carrying.
At least 75 volunteers and six private boats joined in the third day of searching for the boy yesterday, but found no sign of the youth, said Fire Department Battalion Chief Charles Cope.
The search effort yesterday included state and county rescue boats, divers, searchers along the shoreline and two fire department helicopters.
Coast Guard officials also helped with the search in a C-130 offshore, Cope said, but ended the search at noon.
