UH freshman earns WAC tennis honors

The University of Hawai'i's Sascha Heinemann was named Western Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year in men's tennis and was the first Rainbow Warrior to make the all-WAC singles first team in 10 years.
The native of Eshwege, Germany, had a 14-7 singles mark, including an 11-3 dual match record.
UH seniors Ryan Sceats and Bryon Weinberg were selected to the all-WAC singles second team. Sceats had a career-best 21 victories and an 11-2 dual match mark this season. Weinberg finished the year 9-12 and 6-7 in dual match play.
Sceats and teammate Jarrod Diepraam earned all-WAC doubles second-team honors. The duo posted a 13-9 overall mark and 10-5 dual match record.
The league's coaches made the selections.
SURFING
BALLARD, KENNELLY ADVANCE IN FIJI
Kaua'i surfers Rochelle Ballard and Keala Kennelly remained in contention after the first day of the Roxy Pro Fiji yesterday at Cloudbreak, Tavarua, Fiji.
The first two rounds and half of the third round were completed in 4- to 6-foot waves.
Kennelly advanced to the fourth round with a victory over Australia's Trudy Todd in the third round.
Ballard had one of the top heats of the day with scores of 8.75 and 7.75 for her two best waves in the second round. She has not completed her third-round heat.
Megan Abubo of Waialua was eliminated in the third round by Australian Rebecca Woods, 10.5-7.75.
Carissa Moore, an eighth-grader at Punahou School, placed fourth in the trials heat and did not qualify for the main event.
The contest is the second stop on the 2006 women's World Championship Tour.

HPU HANDS HILO FIRST TWO PACWEST LOSSES
Nicole Kalakau batted 2 for 4 with two runs scored and two RBIs as Hawai'i Pacific held off Hawai'i-Hilo, 7-6, yesterday to sweep a Pacific West Conference doubleheader at HPU Windward field.
It was the first two losses in conference play for Hilo (29-17, 10-2); HPU improved to 26-17 and 9-5.
Natalie Fujimoto batted 2 for 4 with two runs scored and three RBIs for Hilo, which scored three times in the top of the seventh.
In the first game, Kellie Nishikida batted 2 for 4 with two RBIs as HPU won, 8-5.
Hilo is ranked No. 8 in the West region rankings and HPU is No. 9. The top eight at the end of the regular season advance to the regionals.
CORRECTION
Josh Queja hit a two-run triple in the fourth inning for Mililani in its 6-4 O'ahu Interscholastic Association Western Division baseball victory over Wai'anae on Saturday. Another player was reported in yesterday's editions.
