Online service a hot ticket for UH fans

The University of Hawai'i athletic department is "encouraged" by the initial response of fans to its new online ticketing options.

Seventy-two percent of fans who have bought online tickets to baseball and men's volleyball events since the feature debuted two weeks ago have taken advantage of the print-at-home option, according to John McNamara, UH associate athletic director for external affairs.

"Based upon the number of tickets ending up with customers, it appears the print-at-home has caught on very quickly," he said.

Fans who buy and print their tickets take an 8.5-by-11 sheet to be scanned at entry gates instead of waiting in line at a will-call window. McNamara said scanning has significantly reduced waiting time in box-office lines, a key reason for the program's implementation.

The ability to select and print tickets online has been available for three baseball and three volleyball contests. UH said it expects to offer the option for all ticketed events in the fall and has teamed with Aloha Stadium on the new digital ticket system.

In August, UH is scheduled to debut a "marketplace" feature that will allow season-ticket holders to return for sale tickets from their allotment they are unable to use. It will allow fans without season tickets an opportunity to buy seats in premium locations. Under the plan, if the tickets are sold, the seller receives 60 percent of the ticket value credited back to its account. Buyers will pay face value plus an additional 25 percent of the value. Other tickets can still be purchased through HawaiiAthletics.com for face value and a $3 handling charge.

In addition, UH said it will offer a "transfer" option that will allow season-ticket holders to transfer seats to friends online, McNamara said. UH said there will be a $3 charge for each e-mail ticket transfer regardless of the number of tickets involved.

Ticket pickup and mailing services will remain available but at a $1 fee for will call and $2 per ticket mailed, UH said.
