INS 'N' OUTS: Big changes are in store for Society of Seven fans when the "original" group, led by Tony Ruivivar, returns to the Las Vegas marquee beginning Aug. 16 in the 3 p.m. slot at the main showroom of the Flamingo Hotel.

Out: Randy Abellar, drummer and occasional vocalist, and lead singer Albert Maligmat, who had been filling in after the death of Gary Bautista Jan. 30.

In: Mark Escueta, a lead singer, keyboardist and percussionist based in Vegas and previously associated with the San Fernando Band of Guam; and Vince Mendoza, singer, saxophonist and percussionist, recently of O'ahu, and a former member of the Hawai'i- and Vegas-based Aura group.

"We played a number of shows with nine members," Ruivivar said of summer performances in Vancouver, Edmonton, Toronto and Winnipeg. Rehearsals are now under way in Vegas, as the guys — who will be joined, of course, by Filipina songbird Lani Misalucha — in the group's new home at the Flamingo. They'll do matinee shows daily except Sundays and Mondays through the end of the year.

Escueta, a longtime fan of Bautista, has a pliable range of voices and is capable of reaching registers in the realm of Barry Gibb, Michael Jackson and Frankie Valli, and flexible enough to impersonate Cher. Ruivivar had previously mentored Mendoza when Aura was a sometimes attraction at the SOS' earlier home base, the Main Showroom of the Outrigger Waikiki.

Abellar will remain in show biz, possibly with his singer wife, and Maligmat returns to his nightlife jobs in Waikiki. ...

Besides, the store layout is like the ones here — she feels very much at home. If you're relocating to the gambling capital and need Matsumoto's help, e-mail her at joycem@americanagrp.com. ...
