Sullivan selected MVP of X Games surfing

Advertiser Staff

Pancho Sullivan of O'ahu's North Shore was named the most valuable player of the ESPN X Games 12 surfing competition.

The contest was completed last month at Zicatela Beach, Mexico, but was televised nationally yesterday on ABC.

Sullivan was the top scorer for the victorious West Coast team. The two-day contest was held in 4- to 6-foot waves, and the West Coast beat the East Coast, 103.30-73.85.

Sullivan received a near-perfect score of 9.5 (out of 10) for a long barrel ride.

"I've always thought of surfing as the most extreme sport and it's great to get that recognition from ESPN while competing with people I respect most," Sullivan said. "It's an unreal feeling."

Sullivan was the only Hawai'i surfer on the West Coast team. Jamie O'Brien of O'ahu's North Shore was a wildcard selection on the East. O'Brien was the MVP of the 2005 X competition.
