Back to school jam: Time to plan ahead

Advertiser Staff

Almost 60,000 university and private school students return next week to classrooms across O'ahu, and that can only mean one thing for island drivers: Your summer vacation is almost over, too. All the extra students (and their parents) on the road usually add anywhere from five to 30 minutes to most commutes, according to the those in the know — the ones piled up on the H-1 Freeway. It's not just that there are more cars on the road, though. In fact, Department of Transportation statistics show there isn't a particularly big jump in the total number of cars on the road over the course of a school day. Instead, the problem is that there are a lot more people trying to get to the same place at the same time. That means traffic on H-1 Freeway, which provides the primary link between suburban residential areas and a large cluster of urban schools, tends to be even busier than usual in the morning rush hour, which then lasts even longer than usual. So each year state and city officials plead with drivers to do their part by trying alternative forms of transportation or adjusting their driving schedule to help "Beat the School Jam." Remember: every little bit helps. And so does a little bit of patience.
