'Anuenue's Kealoha Wengler acknowledges wins will be hard to come by this season, but the coach of the first-year O'ahu Interscholastic Association member is happy with the direction his team is headed.

Despite a 26-6 loss to Kaimuki last night at the Kaiser High stadium, Wengler said he is "proud of his boys."

Na Koa, which suited up just 22 players, impressed Bulldogs coach Daniel Mafua.

"These guys have lots of heart," Mafua said. "With just 21-22 players, they played their hearts out."

Chase Nanod gave Kaimuki a 6-0 lead with a 12-yard touchdown run, but 'Anuenue answered on the ensuing drive that was capped by a 1-yard scamper by quarterback Kaehukai Nauka.

Perry Faleau, who led all rushers with 93 yards on 14 carries, gave the Bulldogs the lead for good with a 13-yard scoring run, and Kaimuki added touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters to pull away.

Wengler, who has just one senior on his roster, says the goal for Na Koa is "to stay healthy and gain experience this year, and hopefully next year compete."

Nauka, who threw for 148 yards, said the players "don't have any expectations" for the first varsity season. "We just come out and play."

Nauka said the team has dedicated the season to "Uncle Anakala," who watched over many of the players as youngsters in Palolo Valley. "He looked after a lot of us."
