HONOLULU

WALK OBSERVES 9/11 ANNIVERSARY

The public is invited to join Mayor Mufi Hannemann on a "Walk of Remembrance" around the civic center and into Kaka'ako on Sept. 10 as the city observes the fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attack.

The event includes brief ceremonies and wreath presentations at the Honolulu Police Department's Alapa'i Street headquarters, the Honolulu Fire Department's headquarters at Queen and South streets and the Prince Kuhio Federal Building, and ends at Honolulu Hale with a service.

Marchers are encouraged to bring flashlights and asked to gather by 6:30 p.m. at the Beretania Street entrance to HPD headquarters. The procession grew out of a new movement encouraging freedom walks linked to the Sept. 11th anniversary, Hannemann said.

"No matter what people might feel about events that transpired since then, the walk is meant to remember the losses we suffered and the heroism that we summoned up that day," he said.
