Change afoot for '07 Pro Bowl

By Kyle Sakamoto
Advertiser Staff Writer

The NFL's Pro Bowl will be played for the 28th time at Aloha Stadium on Feb. 10, 2007.

But this time, some things will be different.

The season-ending all-star game is switching from ESPN to CBS, and it will be played on a Saturday. The game also will have a national sponsor for the first time.

Gov. Linda Lingle and Mayor Mufi Hannemann were on hand for a press conference promoting Pro Bowl Week yesterday at the Sheraton Moana Surfrider Hotel's Grand Salon.

"The agreement with CBS, specifically with this year's broadcast, enables them to move the game to Saturday to meet their programming calendar, which they exercised this year," said Frank Supovitz, senior vice president of events for the NFL.

The only other time the Pro Bowl was played on a Saturday was in 2002 in the aftermath of 9/11.

The national sponsor is State Farm Insurance.

The Pro Bowl, which will be played here through 2009, brings in more than $30 million annually to the state.

Lingle thanked NFL personnel for visiting hospitals, military bases and schools, and conducting clinics. Lingle said the league is funding the construction of a community center in Nanakuli and paying for improvements to the stadium.

The meeting also announced the schedule of events taking place during Pro Bowl Week and ticket sales, which started yesterday. The main pre-game event will be the All-Star Block Party on Kalakaua the night before the game. The event is free.

Tickets are available at the Aloha Stadium box office, Ticketmaster.com and all Ticketmaster outlets, including Times Supermarkets, BYU-Hawai'i, Blaisdell box office and Mokihana Travel on Kaua'i. They are also available by phone at 877-750-4400.
