Hilo Hattie plan outsources jobs

Hilo Hattie plans to outsource some of the production at its Iwilei factory in a move that will cut 17 jobs.

The company, which employs about 500 , said it plans to transfer garment cutting functions from Iwilei to contractors in Asia to save costs. The move takes effect Jan. 31.

Planning, design and other manufacturing functions will remain at the company's Iwilei plant, said Lena Young, vice president for human resources.

She said the 17 employees will be given the opportunity to apply for other positions in the company.


STAR TO CLOSE KANE'OHE STORE

Star Markets Ltd. said it will close its Kane'ohe grocery store sometime after Feb. 5.

The store, on Kamehameha Highway across from Windward Mall, currently employs 41 workers.

The company said it has not yet decided how many of those employees will be retained to work at Star's remaining locations.


TOURISM AGENCY TO MARKET EVENTS

The Hawai'i Tourism Authority will launch a $400,000 campaign to market local festivals and events to visitors who have already arrived.

The yearlong campaign, which begins in January, will promote about 60 festivals via hotel in-room TV, magazines, an in-flight message from Gov. Linda Lingle, radio, the Internet and a concierge program.

The HTA already spends about $2 million to support various festivals and events in Hawai'i.
