Cherry blossom festival Saturday

The Waimea Cherry Blossom Heritage Festival will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

The event showcases the town's historic cherry trees and the Japanese tradition of hanami, or cherry blossom viewing.

Activities will extend from Church Row Park to the Parker Ranch Historic Homes on Mamalahoa Highway. A group from Kanazawa, Japan, will perform, and there will be bonsai, origami, calligraphy and tea ceremony demonstrations, mochi pounding and a crafts fair.

ELECTIONS OFFICE MOVES INTO MALL

The Elections Division of the Big Island county clerk's office has moved to Prince Kuhio Mall, Suite 655, in Hilo.

The office is near the mall entrance next to Macy's Men, Children and Home Store.

Business hours are 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays.

DEPUTY FINANCE DIRECTOR NAMED

Accountant Belma A. Baris, of Hanama'ulu, formerly head of finance for Mahelona Medical Center and Kaua'i Veterans Memorial hospital, has been named deputy county director of finance.

The position has been vacant since John Isobe left in October 2005.

VALENTINE'S DAY FILM A MYSTERY

The Wahiawa Public Library is holding a free Valentine's mystery movie presentation on Feb. 14 at 6:30 p.m. It will be a 90-minute feature, but library officials said their license to present the film prohibits public announcement of the title.

The movie is suitable for all ages.

The library also is starting a Wednesdays-only 30-minute story-time program recommended for children ages 3 to 5. The 10:30 a.m. program will run from Feb. 8 through March 15. Children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver.

SONGWRITING COURSE OFFERED

The McKinley Community School for Adults once again offers an evening introductory course in songwriting, taught by musician and recording artist Stan Rubens, who has recorded four albums and published more than 45 songs.

The class runs for five weeks, beginning Feb. 7, with sessions every Tuesday evening through February and the first week of March. Classes will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Cost is $20.

Rubens will cover a wide range of material, including: finding and applying the lyrical and musical hook; song structure; meter in lyrics and poetry; simple and complex chords; Hawaiian song structure; shortcuts to record demos; modern keyboards and arranging; album production and final mixdown; and much more.

GOLF TOURNAMENT ENTRIES AVAILABLE

Entries are being accepted for the second annual Boys & Girls Club of Hawai'i-Spalding Clubhouse Charity Golf Tournament on May 19 at Pearl Country Club. The Hawai'i chapter of CCIM (Commercial Investment Member) and Boys & Girls Club of Hawai'i are co-sponsoring the benefit.

The Spalding Clubhouse is behind Washington Middle School in the McCully area.

Entry fee for a four-person team is $600. The format is scramble. Registration and lunch will be at 11:30 a.m. followed by a shotgun start at 1 p.m.

The tournament concludes with dinner and awards.
