Washington State sophomore point guard Derrick Low returned to the court for the first time since breaking a bone in his foot last month.
The 2004 Iolani graduate missed eight games after suffering the injury during a practice on Jan. 3.
He played eight minutes and recorded an assist in a 50-30 loss to UCLA Thursday, and started the following game, a 60-47 win over Southern California Saturday. He had five points and three assists in 26 minutes against the Trojans.
BASEBALL
San Francisco senior right-hander Patrick McGuigan (Mid-Pacific '02) allowed five runs (four earned) and 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings to pick up his first win of the season in an 11-5 win against Sacramento State. He walked two and struck out three. It was McGuigan's third career start. He was the closer last season. McGuigan (1-1) is USF's No. 1 starter.
Sacramento State sophomore infielder Taylor Watanabe ('Aiea '03) batted 4 for 8 with two RBIs during a three-game series against San Francisco over the weekend. He went 1 for 3 with a sacrifice fly in the Hornets' only win of the three-game series, 6-2, on Sunday. He did not play in the game against McGuigan.
Brigham Young freshman first baseman/DH Kasey Ko (Punahou '05) batted 3 for 8 in a series that was swept by Pacific over the weekend.
Point Loma Nazarene freshman outfielder Kaohi Downing (Punahou '05) batted 3 for 4 with three RBIs in an 11-0 win against Westmont in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday. Downing is batting .346.
Southern Utah freshman infielder Chester Wilson (Saint Louis '05) batted 4 for 10, all doubles, with two RBIs to help his team win 3 of 4 from Utah Valley State over the weekend. Also, teammate and freshman second baseman Keli'i Zablan (Saint Louis '05) went 3 for 9 with two steals in the series.
Saddleback College sophomore right-hander Kanekoa Texeira (Kamehameha '04) pitched five-plus innings, allowing three runs and three hits with four strikeouts in an 8-5 win against Los Angeles Valley Sunday. It was Texeira's second win of the season.
WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL
Pepperdine junior libero Kekai Crabbe (Kamehameha '03) was selected to train with the U.S. National A2 Team this summer, USA Volleyball announced yesterday.
The team will train in New Orleans, beginning May 22.
TRACK AND FIELD
Washington senior Lauran Dignam (Iolani '02 of 'Aina Haina) placed sixth in the 400 (56.32 seconds) at the Husky Classic Saturday.
California-Berkeley freshman Fran Weems (Kealakehe '05 of Kailua, Kona) finished ninth in the event after a season-best 57.31.
Cal sophomore Pippa Macdonald (Punahou '03 of Kailua) placed 21st in the 800 (2:11.87).
Occidental (Los Angeles) senior Derek Turbin (Punahou '02) was honored with the Ben Cully award for team captain and Jim Harvey Award for the team's most outstanding jumper.
MEN'S VOLLEYBALL
UC Irvine freshman libero Brent Asuka (Iolani '05) recorded 12 digs in a 35-33, 23-30, 31-29, 39-37 victory over No. 10 UC Santa Barbara Saturday.
MEN'S GOLF
Oregon junior Matt Ma (Iolani '02 of 'Aiea) finished in a tie for 78th at the Hawai'i-Hilo Invitational at the par-71 Waikoloa Club Golf Course.
Ma shot 72-77-76—225 at the tournament that concluded Friday.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Pacific senior center Tina Sanerivi (Farrington of Waipahu) had 11 points and two rebounds in a 77-54 loss to Long Beach State Saturday.
Cal State L.A. senior guard Monica Tokoro (Iolani '01 of 'Aiea) was named to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District second team.
She scored 22 points in a 70-65 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills Friday.
Washington University (St. Louis) freshman guard Shanna-Lei Dacanay (Punahou '05) scored seven points during the first 10 minutes of the second half to help give WU a 51-35 advantage in a 64-46 win over Case Western Reserve Friday.
Dacanay finished with 13 points, three assists and four rebounds.
California Lutheran junior forward Caroline Beddow (Mid-Pacific '03) scored 14 points and freshman guard Cheryl Lee (Maryknoll '05) had 10 points and a game-high nine assists in an 83-49 win over CalTech Feb. 4.
SOFTBALL
Tennessee freshman second baseman Liane Horiuchi (Kamehameha '05 of Wahiawa) got her first collegiate hit with a single to left field in a 1-0, eight-inning win over Illinois State in the opener of the Coastal Carolina Tournament Friday.
Utah sophomore shortstop Sharee Fonoti (Kamehameha '04) was 2 for 3 with two RBIs in a 5-1 win over Portland State Saturday at the Hilton Las Cruces Classic. She was 1 for 4 with two RBIs in an 11-9 loss to Ohio State Sunday.
SWIMMING
San Diego senior Ashley Swart (Kaiser '02 of Hawai'i Kai) won the 200 backstroke (2:26.78) and 400 individual medley (4:26.37) at a dual meet with San Diego State Feb. 4.
Stanford junior Hongzhe Sun (Iolani '03) won the 200 backstroke (1:42.86) and was third in the 200 individual medley (1:47.27) in a dual meet with Southern California Feb. 4. His 400 medley relay team also won in 3:13.74.
Carnegie Mellon (Pa.) junior Meagan Yee (Iolani of Ho-nolulu) was named to the University Athletic Association winter academic honor roll.
WOMEN'S GOLF
Stanford freshman Mari Chun (Kamehameha '05) placed 31st at the Northrup Grumman Regional Challenge at the par-71 Palos Verdes Golf Club. She shot 75-79—154 at the tournament that concluded yesterday.
