Kapolei and Kamehameha-Maui were young programs playing in their first state quarterfinal game, but the Hurricanes looked like veterans in a 4-1 win over the Warriors yesterday.
Kapolei advanced to the semifinals of the Meadow Gold Dairies/HHSAA Boys Soccer State Championships at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
Junior forward Aaron Santiago scored two goals and junior midfielder Kainoa Bryant and senior midfielder Drew Geis each added one for the Hurricanes (13-1-0), who play second-seeded Punahou (13-2-0) tonight at 6. Iolani (13-2-1) and top-seeded Mililani (11-1-1) meet in the other semifinal at 8.
"The scores came because we passed and moved," Kapolei coach Bryce Kaneshiro said. "Our style of play is one-two touch, pass and move."
Bryant scored in the ninth minute after receiving a pass from senior Christian Rabang on the left side of the penalty box.
"I was trying to get wide but I saw the channel between the defenders," Bryant said. "I called to (Rabang) and he passed it to me. I took a touch with my right foot because the guy was coming over, and shot it."
Junior midfielder/forward Curtis Kiyabu had a chance to make it 2-0 in the 26th minute when his header off a cross from freshman midfielder Justin Malvar hit the crossbar. But he teamed with Bryant to set up Santiago's goal a few minutes later.
Kiyabu and Bryant worked a give-and-go on the left side of the field, and Bryant crossed the ball to Santiago, who shot a high ball into the net in the 29th minute.
Geis' goal also came off a combination play, this time a give-and-go with Malvar. After Geis received the pass from Malvar, he passed it to senior forward Daniel Garcia, whose pass led Geis down the right side of the field. Kamehameha-Maui defenders stopped running trying to do an offside trap, leaving Geis wide open for the score in the 62nd minute.
"I just kept making my run in case the referee didn't call it (on another player)," Geis said.
Santiago scored his second goal in the 69th minute when he chased down a long ball that junior Mychal Malachi sent into space.
"I was just making my run, I saw a defender coming, and I took my shot," Santiago said.
Kamehameha-Maui sophomore midfielder Josh Nitta scored in the 39th minute on a long pass.
MILILANI 1, KAISER 0
A heads-up play by a player not even listed as a field player resulted in the lone goal.
Senior Keoni Lamonte, listed erroneously as a goalkeeper but playing forward yesterday, scored in the 28th minute when a collision between a Kaiser and Mililani player momentarily distracted the teams. Lamonte didn't stop playing, shooting the ball from just inside the 18-yard box.
"I just kept playing until the referee blew the whistle," Lamonte said. "I was confused at the time. I didn't know what was going on. The goal was in front of me, so I thought I might as well try to put it in."
IOLANI 4, WAIAKEA 0
Iolani made quick work of fourth-seeded Waiakea, the Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion, scoring two goals in the first five minutes to advance to the semifinals for the second straight year.
Senior forward Raymond Machi scored twice and sophomore midfielders Blaine Gonsalves and Kevin Fung each added a goal for the Raiders.
Machi netted his first goal 17 seconds into the game. Machi took a pass from senior midfielder Dylan Langley, then passed the ball to junior forward Morgan Langley with one touch. Morgan Langley tracked the ball down to the right endline and sent the ball to Machi, who put it in the goal.
"We practice a lot of wing plays," Machi said. "My two goals were just how it was in practice, so that was good."
A little over four minutes later another combination play resulted in Gonsalves' goal, when senior midfielder Lee Anderson passed to Gonsalves, who worked a give-and-go with Machi to free Gonsalves for an open shot.
Fung scored the third goal on a low 30-yard free kick and Machi capped the scoring in the 65th minute.
PUNAHOU 3, HAWAI'I PREP 0
Punahou junior forward/midfielder Nick Love continued doing what he did the entire season: score.
Love scored his first goal 1 minute, 50 seconds into the game when he shot a well-placed ball between the goalkeeper and the near right post. Senior defender Aaron Yamamoto threw the ball in to junior midfielder Will Jensen, who flicked the ball with his head to Love.
"I was surprised I got through," Love said. "Once we got that one goal, it made us more pumped."
Love, who was tied for second in the ILH with 14 goals, scored his second goal in the 11th minute on a cross from senior midfielder Fernando Liquido from the left side that found Love in front of the goal. Love brought the ball down with a touch, then volleyed it into the goal.
Junior forward Deryck Lim scored in injury time (81:45) when he put away a rebound on a blocked shot by junior forward Bennett Pang.
