ART SEKI, director of technology for Hawaiian Electric Co. (HECO), is the utility's representative to the American Council on Renewable Energy, making HECO one of only 10 utilities nationwide to be represented on the organization's new committee to promote renewable energy nationally. The Washington, D.C.-based non-profit organization will exchange information on technical and regulatory issues — as well as "best practices" and success stories from utilities that have adopted renewable energy programs. Seki joined HECO in 1990 after working at the University of Hawai'i, Natural Energy Institute, where he worked on geothermal reservoir engineering, and well test analysis in Puna. He was also involved in research on photovoltaics, ocean thermal energy conversion, biomass tree farms and hydrogen energy.
Hilo businessman, WAYNE K. KAMITAKI, has been elected to the board of directors of the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai'i, replacing retired judge Ricki May Amano, who was named the organization's president and executive director in May. Kamitaki is chief executive officer of the family-owned, Maui Varieties Ltd., and its subsidiaries — including Ben Franklin Crafts stores in Hawai'i, and a chain of Ace Hardware stores on the Big Island, Maui, Kaua'i and in Las Vegas. He is also chief volunteer officer for the Big Island YMCA and volunteer director of the Hawai'i Japanese Center in Hilo. Also named to the JCCH board of directors are at-large members: LEE MORIWAKI, executive vice president and manager, non-branch channels, Bank of Hawai'i; and WAYNE H. MURAOKA, vice president of real estate and development company, Armstrong Properties Ltd.
KEITH DeMELLO, with McNeil Wilson Communications Inc. since 1999, has been promoted to senior account supervisor of the public relations agency's Corporate/Public Affairs Division. Most recently account supervisor, he oversees a range of clients, including Architects Hawai'i Ltd., Catholic Charities Hawai'i, and the USS Missouri Memorial Association Inc. McNeil Wilson has also promoted Emele Freiberg and Dara Lum to senior account executive. Freiberg will help manage the firm's Kauai'i Visitors Bureau account, and Lum will assist in leading the Hawaiian Airlines, Prince Resorts Hawai'i, Hawai'i Hotel & Lodging Association and Sea Life Park Hawai'i accounts.
BARBRA PLEADWELL, partner, Hastings & Pleadwell: A Communication Co., has been named president of the board of directors of the Organization of Women Leaders. Also elected were president elect JOELLE WADA, vice president and commercial banking officer, Bank of Hawai'i; membership vice president (for private sector): anna marie springer, senior vice president, community liaison, American Savings Bank; membership vice president (public sector): PAMELA MARTIN, state Department of Labor and Industrial Relations, Wage Standards Division, administrator; program vice president: STACIA MURRAY, Ameriprise Financial advisor; recording secretary: VIRGINIA PRIBYLA, retired U.S. Air Force officer; corresponding secretary: MARY SHERIDAN, Hawai'i Pacific University professor, and program chair of social work; treasurer: SANDRA UYENO, University of Hawai'i, Community Colleges, director of human resources.
Former Bishop Museum sales director RONALD HEE, has been named director of sales and marketing for Sea Life Park. He will be working in partnership with Atlantis Adventures, which provides sales and marketing services for the park, and promoting a global brand presence for new owners, Dolphin Discovery. Hee has also held positions with Sheraton Hotels in Waikiki, Roberts Tours and Aloha Airlines.
MERIDETH KIMBLE has been named assistant editor of Hawai'i Home + Remodeling Magazine, by publisher, PacificBasin Communications. She previously worked in Institutional Advancement for Hawai'i Pacific University.
LISA M. GREEN has been named manager of marketing, customer service and sales for Young Brothers Ltd. Most recently, she was executive vice president and co-owner of Media Solutions Consulting Group in Tampa, Fla.
