Basic facts on this year's Senate race

 •  Case's bid for Senate shakes up Democrats

Here are some questions and answers about the U.S. Senate race, sparked by yesterday's announcement by U.S. Rep. Ed Case:

Q: How long has Case held his U.S. House seat?

A: Since 2002.

Q: How long has Sen. Daniel Akaka held his seat?

A: Since 1990.

Q: Who are Case's current constituents? Who are Akaka's?

A: Case represents the 2nd Congressional District, which covers Central, Leeward and Windward O'ahu, the North Shore and all the Neighbor Islands. As a U.S. senator, Akaka represents the entire state.

Q: How long is a U.S. House term? A U.S. Senate term?

A: The House term is two years; a Senate term is six years.

Q: When is the election?

A: The next general election is Nov. 7, but Case and Akaka will square off in the Democratic primary election on Sept. 23.

Q: When is Hawai'i's other member of the U.S. Senate — Daniel K. Inouye — up for election?

A: Inouye is up for re-election in 2010.
