Phase I of Kamehameha's 24-hour make-or-break portion of the schedule was completed last night with a 61-48 victory over visiting Punahou.
Phase II will be tonight against Iolani, which hasn't lost an Interscholastic League of Honolulu game since late in the 2001 season.
Last night against Punahou, the Warriors used a quick start and accurate free-throw shooting down the stretch to improve to 5-0.
Rykin Enos scored 13 points and Mitchell Kauweloa added 12 for Kamehameha.
"I'm just so proud of our boys," Warriors coach Jesse Nakanishi said. "This is all about their work ethic at practice. They've accepted their roles and executed their roles."
The Warriors held Punahou (3-2) without a field goal for nearly 11 minutes of the first half in taking a 24-10 lead with 2:03 left before halftime.
"They've been hungry for this. Actually we haven't beaten Punahou in a couple years, at least since we took over," said Nakanishi, who is in his third year with the Warriors. "They were real energized and that's what we needed."
In the third quarter, Miah Ostrowski and Spencer McLachlin each hit two 3-pointers as Punahou got within 35-32 with 2:17 left.
"We came out slow and they went up early and it's tough because we're playing in their house," said Ostrowski, who scored 12 of his 18 points in the second half.
The Buffanblu were down three with 6:43 left in the game, but the Warriors went on an 8-0 run to go up 48-37 with 3:25 left.
"I told the kids before the game I think Jesse is one of the best coaches in the state," Punahou coach Greg Tacon said. "He game plans well, puts his kids in the right position. I need to do a better job of that or they need to find somebody else."
Kamehameha held on to the lead by hitting 11-of-14 free throws over the final 3:07 as Punahou never got closer than six.
"At practice we try to make game situations so we don't get pressured out and free throws are the most important thing we do," Cummings said.
Iolani (5-0) beat Mid-Pacific, 74-40, last night.
"Iolani's going to be a tough game, but if we play a game like we did tonight we should be all right," Kamehameha's Jacob Ho said.
