Hawaiian Electric Co. has released a second volume in its cooking series — this one with recipes from company employees and retirees and their families and friends. These are tried-and-true dishes: Ida's Shoyu Chicken with Sherry, Nora's Portuguese Pickled Fried Sardines, Popo Pork Hash. The 164-page spiral-bound book is "A Taste to Remember: Tropical Flavors from Hawaiian Electric Co," and sales benefit Aloha United Way. (The first volume, of recipes from HECO home economists' files, sold more than 5,500 copies.)

Cost is $10, at the customer service/cashier desks at two HECO offices: at the corner of King and Richards streets, and on Ward Avenue. Information: Leta Wakamatsu, 543-5663; leta.wakamatsu@heco.com.

MAKE A RESERVATION FOR CUDDLES OR CHARITY

  • A word of advice: Valentine's Day falls on a Tuesday this year, but that's no reason to assume it will be a cinch to get a reservation.

  • March 1 is the date of Oahu Dines 2006, a benefit for Life Foundation, a local AIDS organization. Restaurants are signing on to offer a portion of their night's proceeds, or a flat donation. Among those participating: town (which celebrated Oahu Dines 2005 on its opening night last year), Boots & Kimo's Homestyle Kitchen, Tiki's Grill & Bar, Big City Diner, Le Guignol and El Charro II Mexican Food.
