Museum theft under scrutiny

Police are investigating the theft of items from the Watumull Gallery at the Honolulu Academy of Arts, a family member confirmed yesterday.
KITV reported on Saturday night that $500,000 worth of jewelry was taken from the Watumull Gallery in May. The report was based on information from unnamed sources.
Police criminal investigations supervising personnel were unable to confirm the report yesterday and the Honolulu Academy of Arts referred inquiries to its director, Stephen Little, who did not return calls seeking comment.

BODY FOUND IN BURNED HOME
Big Island firefighters found a body Saturday inside an isolated two-story home that was gutted by fire at 46-3647 Old Mamalahoa Highway in Honoka'a.
Firefighters responding to the 4:01 p.m. alarm found the structure fully engulfed, said Honoka'a fire Capt. Sundie Aribal. Two vehicles in the carport were also damaged. The fire was extinguished at 6:32 p.m. Damages are estimated at $200,000.
Big Island police had no comment yesterday about the body that was found.

GUNSHOTS LEAD TO MAN'S ARREST
A 23-year-old man was arrested for questioning early Saturday morning by police investigating shots allegedly fired from a car on Nimitz Highway near Sumner Street in Iwilei.
No one was injured in the shooting reported to police at 3:49 a.m.
Police recovered casings on the highway and were able to track down the owner of the vehicle. The owner was arrested for questioning for two firearms-related offenses.

MAN CHARGED IN VEHICLE RAMMING
Police charged 56-year-old Edward Wolfe for allegedly ramming a vehicle several times while driving Friday on Kalaniana'ole and Kamehameha highways in Kailua. Wolfe was charged with first-degree criminal property damage and first-degree terroristic threatening and is being held in lieu of $25,000 bail.
Wolfe allegedly yelled at a motorist, a 70-year-old man, claiming the man owed him money. The complainant told police he does not know Wolfe.

'BIRD GUY' TO BE AT PUBLIC LIBRARY
Pearl City Public Library has announced a change in its children's summer reading program schedule for next Monday. "Bruce McGonigal: The Bird Guy — Have Birds Will Travel" will replace an event featuring Charles King.
McGonigal will introduce his parrots and other species of birds, share some information about them and suggest which birds would make good pets.
The free program, suitable for all ages, will start at 1:30 p.m. Pearl City Library is at 1138 Waimano Home Road.
