Monden qualifies for diving nationals

Advertiser Staff

Aleia Monden, a 2006 St. Andrew's Priory graduate, qualified for the Senior National Championships in the 10-meter platform event this past weekend in Pasadena, Calif., according to a press release.

Monden, a four-time state high school champion from Mililani, was steady in the preliminaries and finals, finishing fifth on her first list of dives and moving to fourth on her second. Her highlight in the prelims was a back 2 1/2-somersault pike, and her top dive in the finals was an inward 2 1/2-somersault pike.

The Tropic Lightning diver missed qualifying in the 3-meter springboard event. She was third after the prelims, but faltered on a reverse 2 1/2-somersault tuck and finished 11th.

Monden, who will be attending Florida State on a partial athletic scholarship, will travel to Indianapolis, July 25 to 30 for the Junior Nationals and remain there for the Senior Nationals the following week.

SURFING

POWERS OUSTS IRONS

Hawai'i surfers Roy Powers and Pancho Sullivan advanced to the third round of the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay with upset victories over fellow Hawai'i surfers yesterday.

The second round was held in 2- to 3-foot waves at Jeffreys Bay, South Africa.

Powers eliminated former world champion Andy Irons, 10.83-10.66. Powers clinched the victory with less than two minutes remaining when his final wave received a score of 7.33.

Powers and Irons grew up surfing together in Hanalei, Kaua'i.

"It kind of sucks beating someone you grew up with, somebody you look up to," Powers said. "I mean, he's my hero ... so in a way, I feel bad, but then it feels good for me to beat him too because he is the champ."

Sullivan eliminated 2005 Rookie of the Year Fred Patacchia Jr., 15.07-12.17.

Kaua'i's Bruce Irons was also eliminated in the second round.
