Top seed Toyama ousted

Bill Henry, the 64th seed, beat top seed and defending champion Travis Toyama, 6 and 5, yesterday in the first round of the Manoa Cup at Oahu Country Club.

The second round of match play is today, with the first tee time at 7 a.m. Henry plays Troy Higashiyama, a 1-up winner over Kellen Watabu.

Former Manoa Cup champions advancing to the round of 32 were:

  • Four-time winner Brandan Kop, who defeated Michael Field, 6 and 5;

  • Ryan Perez, who beat Yasuke Aonuma, 8 and 7;

  • Kellen-Floyd Asao, who ousted Edward Han, 3 and 2;

  • Richard Sieradzki, who edged Jon Daniel Jr., on the 19th hole.

    The 36-hole final is scheduled for Saturday.

    HSWGA STROKE PLAY

    Recent Moanalua graduate Jaclyn Hilea opened with a 3-under-par 69 yesterday to take a two-shot lead in the Hawai'i State Women's Golf Association Stroke Play Championship. The final women's major of the year is being played at Mid-Pacific Country Club.

    Hilea shot nines of 34 and 35. Lesly Ann Komoda (71) is next, followed by Kayla Morinaga (72) and Xyra Suyetsugu (74).

    Hilea helped the Menehunes to this year's state high school championship and also won the 15-18 age division at this summer's Hawai'i State Junior Championships. She has been accepted into the International Junior Golf Academy's post-graduate program at Hilton Head, S.C. Students practice and play at Sea Pines Resort.

    Komoda regained her amateur status last year and works at Mid-Pac. She won this title in 1991 and '93. Morinaga, who shared second last year, was recently named to the National Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar Division I Team for her freshman season at Portland State. Suyetsugu, who will be a junior at University of Hawai'i, was eighth in this year's Western Athletic Conference Championship.

    Play begins at 9:22 a.m. in today's second round and tomorrow's final round.

    HP BOYS JUNIORS

    Honolulu's Tadd Fujikawa shot a 1-under-par 71 yesterday and is tied for ninth after the first round of the HP Boys Junior Championship at Orlando, Fla.

    Defending champion Kyle Stanley of Gig Harbor Wash., shot a 66 to take a three-stroke lead over Ricky Fowler of Murrieta, Calif., and Wes Roach of Knoxville, Tenn.

    Fujikawa, a 15-year-old Moanalua student, was tied with six other golfers. He had four birdies and three bogeys on Arnold Palmer's Bay Hill Club & Lodge course.

    The four-round tournament, conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, features 83 boys, ages 14 to 18, from 23 states and Colombia.

    BETSY RAWLS GIRLS

    Honolulu's Stephanie Kono shot a 3-over 74 and was tied for 12th in the McDonald's Betsy Rawls Girls Championship at Malvern, Pa.

    Marika Lendl of Goshen, Conn., Lisa McCloskey of Montgomery, Texas, and Vicky Hurst of Melbourne, Fla., were tied for the lead after shooting 70s.

    Kimberly Kim, a former Big Island resident, was tied for 34th after a 77. Elyse Okada of Kahului, Maui, was tied for 58th in the 76-player field after an 81.

    The 54-hole tournament ends Thursday.

    JR. AMERICA'S CUP

    Hawai'i's boys share second and the girls are fifth after yesterday's opening round of the Jr. America's Cup team competitions.

    The boys, playing at Ogden Golf and Country Club in Utah, trail leader Utah by five shots. Alex Ching and Sean Maekawa opened with rounds of 71, while state high school champion Chan Kim shot 72 and TJ Kua 79. The team total (top three scores) is 214.

    The girls, playing at Oro Valley Country Club in Arizona, are 10 off the lead of Northern California. They were led by Miki Ueoka's 75. Kaitlen Miyajima shot 76, Kristina Merkle 79 and Katie Sisler 86.

    There are 17 teams in the girls' field. The boys' event has 14 teams from the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

    The tournaments conclude tomorrow.
