Schedule will test Rainbow Wahine

The 2006-07 University of Hawai'i women's basketball schedule features four preseason tournaments and the arrival of powerhouses Oklahoma and North Carolina in November.

"It's an awesome schedule," UH coach Jim Bolla said. "We're going to get tested real early."

The 28-game season begins Nov. 17 when the Rainbow Wahine host Georgetown in the Waikiki Beach Marriott Classic, which also has Eastern Kentucky and Oklahoma. The Sooners are led by 6-foot-3 All-America center Courtney Paris.

"Potentially, we have an opportunity to play against Oklahoma, which was top 5 in the country last year," Bolla said.

Hawai'i hosts the 28th annual Hawaiian Airlines Rainbow Wahine Classic, Nov. 24 to 26. North Carolina, which spent much of last year at No. 1 before falling in the national semifinals, returns All-America point guard Ivory Latta. Arkansas, Denver, Gonzaga, Sacramento State, UCLA and UH's first-round foe, Texas Tech, round out the field.

The Rainbow Wahine will also host the Paradise Classic, Dec. 15 to 16, which includes Evansville, Chattanooga and Portland State, and the Hawai'i Invitational, Dec. 29 to 30, which has Columbia, Oklahoma State and San Francisco.

Hawai'i opens the 16-game Western Athletic Conference season against visiting New Mexico State, Jan. 4. The WAC Tournament, March 6 to 10, will be held at Las Cruces, N.M.

UH finished last season 18-10 and third in the WAC at 9-7.

Yesterday, Bolla announced the signing of junior college transfer Iwona Zagrobelna, a 6-foot-4 center from Wroclaw, Poland, who played at Weatherford College in Texas the past two seasons.

Zagrobelna, a two-time all-conference player, earned conference defensive player of the year honors as a freshman, leading the league in rebounding (10.8) and ranking third in scoring (17.1). She battled an ankle injury as a sophomore, and averaged 12.3 points and 6.4 rebounds.
