SATURDAY SCOOPS
Jammin' at water park
Advertiser Staff
The first really big music festival of the summer — Kulcha Klash, sporting five stages of reggae, hip-hop, Island rhythms and DJs — rides into Hawaiian Waters Adventure Park in Kapolei tonight.
Alas, the water rides will be closed — with the exception of Da FlowRider, which will be open to concert-goers after a competition (see schedule) — but at least you'll stay dry.
So who's/what's on the entertainment schedule?
International reggae star Ky-Mani Marley (offspring of Bob) and dancehall artists Mr. Vegas and Baby Cham.
Twenty DJs, including top trance turntablist Kimball Collins, L.A.'s reggae DJ JFX, DJ Hamano from Japan, and Edzola Ol' Skool from London; and local talents G-Spot, Sovern-T, Mizota, Ikon and others. House, breakbeat, hip-hop, R&B — you name it, they're playing it.
Fifteen local bands and acts, including Marty Dread from Maui, Black Square, Ooklah the Moc and Emirc (pronounced "immerse," as if you didn't know).
Da FlowRider Summer Series is part of a national contest. The winner of the stand-up division gets free airfare to San Diego to compete in the nationals Sept. 16.
Tonight's schedule:
8-9 p.m., competitors practice.
9-11 p.m., the contest.
11 p.m.-2 a.m. open to concert-goers. Fees are $2 per ride on the bodyboard; $5 for unlimited rides on the bodyboard; $10 for unlimited rides on the stand-up board.
