TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE

"AFI's 100 Years ... 100 Cheers," 7 p.m., CBS. What Hollywood does best is to stir emotions and inspire moviegoers. Here's the American Film Institute lineup of the 100 most inspiring movies as chosen by 1,500 film industry experts. Many of the films have a sports connection, for humans ("Rocky," "Chariots of Fire," "Field of Dreams," "Breaking Away," "Hoosiers") or horses ("Seabiscuit," "National Velvet"). Others range from religion ("The Passion of the Christ") to rap ("8 Mile"). There are inspiring stories taken from real life, including "Gandhi," "Schindler's List," "Erin Brockovich" and "Apollo 13." But there's also the rush of great fiction in "Rain Man," "The Color Purple," "It's a Wonderful Life" and more. Those films — and 84 more — are expected to show up here with clips. Commenting will be some of Hollywood's greatest directors (Steven Spielberg, Ron Howard, Norman Jewison and more), plus such great actors as Sidney Poitier, Kirk Douglas, Sally Field, Jane Fonda, Mickey Rooney, Angela Bassett and Marlee Matlin.

OF NOTE

"A Perfect Murder" (1998), 5 and 7 p.m., FX. There was no reason to remake Alfred Hitchcock's "Dial M For Murder," but Andrew Davis ("The Fugitive") directed it beautifully and cast it perfectly. Michael Douglas is the murderous husband, with Gwyneth Paltrow as his young wife and Viggo Mortensen as her lover. Things go horribly awry when the intended victim gets the upper hand.

"So You Think You Can Dance," 7 p.m., Fox. Viewers vote now. Tonight, the 10 men and 10 women perform; on Thursday, we learn which two are out.

"Freddie," 7:30 p.m., ABC. Pressured by his grandmother, Freddie hosts a session at his restaurant for single Catholics. To his surprise, he meets a terrific woman.

"Haunting Evidence" debut, 7:30 p.m., Court TV. Old cases are visited by a psychic, a medium and a paranormal investigator.

"Lost," 8 p.m., ABC. This excellent rerun begins with the raft survivors still unsure who had them captive. Meanwhile, Jack, Locke and Kate are perplexed by the oddities in the hatch.

"American Masters: Cole Porter: You're the Top," 9 p.m., PBS. Here's a well-made 1990 profile of Cole Porter. The only child in a wealthy Indiana farm family, he was nurtured to think, write and perform. He kept a cheery persona, even amid personal tragedy. And in musicals — "Anything Goes," "Can Can," and "Kiss Me Kate" — he mixed bouncy tunes with witty lyrics.

"The Fast and the Furious" (2001), 9 p.m., USA Network. Fast cars and macho people combine in this box-office hit. It includes Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriquez (who had a great one-year run in "Lost") and Vin Diesel.

"Commander in Chief," 9 p.m., series finale, ABC. Here's the last new episode of this show, which started so powerfully and then was mishandled by ABC. Tonight, Mac and her nemesis, Templeton, debate at a Get Out the Vote event.
