The former tour bus driver involved in a fatal collision in Kahalu'u on Monday has lost his driver's license for at least a year, a state official said yesterday.
Police revoked the license of Steve Oshiro, 49, after he refused to submit to a field sobriety test following Monday's crash. Oshiro was driving a Roberts Hawaii tour bus that crossed the center line of Kamehameha Highway, hit an oncoming sport utility vehicle and crashed into a house about 2:30 p.m.
The crash killed the SUV's driver, Corey Voss, 41, of Kane'ohe.
By refusing to be tested after the accident, Oshiro lost his driver's license — which serves as both his personal and commercial license — for at least a year, Department of Transportation spokesman Scott Ishikawa said. If he is caught driving a commercial vehicle, or violates certain other laws, he could lose his commercial driver's license for life, Ishikawa said.
"Commercial drivers should be put at a higher standard ... ," Ishikawa said. "The reason for that is, you are negotiating larger vehicles and you're carrying either passengers or large loads."
Roberts Hawaii fired Oshiro on Thursday because he refused the company's request to take a drug and alcohol test.
Oshiro also was the driver of a tour bus that rear-ended a city bus in the Punahou area earlier Monday, causing minor damage.
