Services for Maui hula elder

KAHULUI, Maui — Services for kumu hula Charlotte Ann "Nina" Maxwell will take place Sunday on Maui.

Maxwell, 68, who died June 14, was the leading elder of Maui's hula community. Her Pukalani Hula Hale was a regular participant in the Merrie Monarch Festival and other competitions.

Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Sunday at Ballard Family Mortuary, with a service at 11 a.m. and lunch from noon to 2 p.m. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. at Valley Isle Memorial Park.

Maxwell is survived by her husband, Charles Kauluwehi Maxwell Sr., a kahu and noted Native Hawaiian activist and cultural specialist; a son, Charles Jr.; daughters KathyMarie Maxwell-Juan and SheriAnn Maxwell; and eight grandchildren.
