Hayashi makes PGA Pro cut

Hilo's Kevin Hayashi shot a 2-under-par 70 in the second round yesterday to make the cut in the PGA Professional National Championship at Verona, N.Y.

Hayashi is tied for 63rd at even-par 144.

Paul Ito of Kaua'i (78) and Maui's Brian Sasada (77) were tied for 302nd at 157 and missed the cut (144). A total of 312 golfers were in the field.

Hayashi and Sasada played at the Turning Stone Resort & Casino's Shenendoah Course, while Ito played the Atunyote Course.

Alan Shulte shot a 69 yesterday for a 136 total and a 1-stroke lead over three golfers, including Don Berry of Minnesota, who finished tied for second in the 2006 Hawai'i Pearl Open in February.


BASKETBALL

UH WILL PLAY HOFSTRA IN ALASKA SHOOTOUT OPENER

The University of Hawai'i men's team will play Hofstra in the first round of the Great Alaska Shootout on Nov. 23.

Pairings for the eight-team tournament were announced yesterday.

The Pride went 26-7 last season and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NIT. The Rainbow Warriors were 17-11 last season.

Other teams in the field are host Alaska-Anchorage, California, Loyola Marymount, Marshall, Missouri-Kansas City and Pacific. California and Pacific participated in last season's NCAA Tournament.

Hawai'i will be playing in the Great Alaska Shootout at Anchorage, Alaska, for the first time since 1993.

Nov. 22—Loyola Marymount vs. Alaska-Anchorage; Missouri-Kansas City vs. Pacific. Nov. 23—Hawai'i vs. Hofstra; Marshall vs. California. Nov. 24—consolation and semifinal games. Nov. 25—seventh place, fifth place, third place and championship games.

BIG ISLAND CLUB PLAYS O'AHU AT MOKULE'IA

The Big Island Polo Club with Lee Mullins and Paula Gorecki from Kamuela, will take on the Hawai'i Polo Club tomorrow at Mokule'ia field.

Gates open at 11 a.m. with matches to start at 2 p.m.

Admission is $7, children 12-years-old and under are free. Military and students with ID will be admitted 2 for 1. For information call 637-8401.
