Astros blow lead, top White Sox in 13

CHICAGO — This could have been a devastating loss for the Houston Astros, whose eight-run lead vanished in what seemed like an instant.

Instead, they regrouped to avoid a three-game sweep in the World Series rematch and ended Chicago's season-high nine-game win streak.

After Brad Lidge gave up a tying grand slam to Tadahito Iguchi with two outs in the ninth inning last night, Willy Taveras' RBI single in the 13th sent the Astros to a 10-9 victory over the White Sox.

"It took everything we had to win the game tonight," Lidge said. "Thank goodness we were able to pull it out."

Adam Everett led off the 13th with a triple down the right-field line, off the glove of a diving Ross Gload. A fan also interfered, and White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen came out of the dugout to argue.

"All four umpires saw it the same way," Guillen said. "There wasn't much you could do about it. They thought he should be at third."

Taveras then singled to left off Brandon McCarthy (3-4) to break the tie.

The Astros led 6-1 after Mike Lamb and Lance Berkman each hit two-run homers during the fifth inning off Javier Vazquez, 9-1 after scoring three in the top of the seventh and 9-5 entering the ninth.

The Astros brought in Lidge and he gave up A.J. Pierzynski's leadoff single.

Things really came apart with two outs, when Alex Cintron singled and Podsednik walked to load the bases. Iguchi, who hit a three-run homer in the eighth, drilled a 1-1 pitch over the center-field wall to tie it at 9, bringing the crowd to its feet.

It was the second grand slam and second multihomer game of Iguchi's career.
