HAWAI'I BRIEFS
Wrong-way driver intoxicated

Advertiser Staff

A Montana woman was intoxicated when she drove the wrong way on the H-3 Freeway this month and collided head-on with another car, killing the other driver, police said.

Traffic investigators have opened a first-degree negligent homicide investigation, but have not arrested the woman, police said. The 46-year-old woman is at The Queen's Medical Center recovering from her injuries and police have yet to interview her.

Fire Department personnel had to cut her car apart to free her after the wreck.

Killed was Janice Madamba, 33, a mother of two who worked at Straub Clinic & Hospital in Pearlridge.

The wreck occurred at 3:45 a.m. June 17 on the Halawa side of H-3, three miles from the Harano Tunnels.

Madamba died at the scene.

MA'ILI

SUSPECT ARRESTED IN SUBWAY HEISTS

Police yesterday arrested a 40-year-old man at his Ma'ili home for questioning about the armed robberies Saturday and Sunday of Subway Sandwich & Salad stores in Waimalu and 'Aiea, respectively.

The man was arrested without incident shortly before 5 p.m. at a Manuaihue Street address. Police went there in response to a CrimeStoppers tip.

On Sunday night, a gunman fired a warning shot at two employees while pulling off his second Subway sandwich shop robbery in as many days, police said.

Police Detective Paul Nagata said the man who robbed the Subway store at the 'Aiea Commercial Building appears to be the same gunman who held up a Subway outlet Saturday at the Waimalu Plaza Shopping Center.

No injuries were reported in the robberies.

KAPOLEI

SEWAGE SPILLS FROM MANHOLES

About 1,900 gallons of untreated sewage spilled from a sewer line in Kapolei yesterday afternoon.

Sewage was reported overflowing from three manholes on Kalaeloa Boulevard near Kapolei Parkway at about 1:15 p.m. City workers found a 10-inch pipe that was partially blocked by grease buildup.

Some of the effluent entered a nearby drainage canal and storm drain system, where city officials said the spill was confined.

Crews removed the spilled sewage and disinfected the area, the city said.

Warning signs have been posted along the canal and the public is advised to avoid the area.

WAHIAWA

PAIR ARRESTED IN CELL-PHONE CASE

A 24-year-old Wahiawa woman and a 22-year-old Schofield Barracks soldier were arrested in Wahiawa Sunday after they allegedly tried to extort a man whose cell phone was taken from him in a robbery on Saturday.

The cell-phone owner, 21, told police a friend called the number of the stolen cell phone and that a woman answered. He said his friend told the woman that the cell-phone owner wanted it returned. The woman demanded $80 to give the phone back.

Police said the phone's owner, 21, met with the man and woman about 10:10 a.m. Sunday in Wahiawa and told the pair he had only $30 — not $80 as was demanded — to get his phone back.

At that point, the other man drew a pocketknife. Plainclothes officers who were monitoring the situation moved in to arrest the couple on suspicion of second-degree extortion.

Police do not believe the pair arrested Sunday took part in the robbery on Saturday.
