Snow 2nd in world longboard

Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i's Ned Snow placed second in the Association of Surfing Professionals Men's World Longboarding Championship contest yesterday.

The final day of the week-long contest was held in 3- to 5-foot waves at Boca Baranca, Costa Rica.

Australia's Josh Constable defeated Snow in the one-on-one final, 14.25-11.35. Snow needed a score of 8.55 in the closing minutes to take the lead, but could only manage a 5.15 with two minutes remaining.

Snow, 21, is a 2004 graduate of Academy of the Pacific. He won three heats yesterday before falling to Constable in the final.

There is no world tour for longboard surfing, so Constable is considered the 2006 world champion. Snow will enter 2007 ranked No. 2.

Hawai'i surfers Duane DeSoto and Bonga Perkins were eliminated in the quarterfinals. DeSoto scored a perfect 10 in the fourth round for a barrel ride followed by several radical maneuvers.

All surfers had to ride surfboards at least 9 feet long.
