The first Maoli Arts Month kicked off on Friday in Chinatown, with exhibitions and performances at venues throughout the neighborhood.

While gallery shows are up for the rest of the month, other MAMo events showcasing the talents of Hawaiian artists will be happening in the coming weeks.

Tomorrow is the opening of a MAMo exhibition at the Kapolei Hale Atrium Gallery (1000 Ulu'ohi'a St., 523-4674). From 1 p.m. the public can view works by Maile Andrade, Bob Freitas, Henry Hopfe, Meleana Meyer, Imaikalani Kalahele and Ka'ohu Seto. The show runs through April 2.

A collaboration of local arts powerhouses Maoli Arts Alliance, Pa'i Foundation, Keomailani Foundation, Bishop Museum, MAMo is an art milestone for Honolulu.

"When we first approached The ARTS at Marks Garage and other galleries about MAMo, they really embraced the idea and ran with it," said Pa'i executive director Vicky Holt Takamine in a news release.
