Four people, including a baby, were injured in Ma'ili early yesterday in a one-car traffic accident on Farrington Highway.
The 7-month-old baby, who was not in an infant-restraint seat, was thrown from the speeding car and was in serious condition yesterday at The Queen's Medical Center, police said.
The driver, a 29-year-old Wai'anae woman, was in critical condition at Queen's.
Two adult passengers, a 20-year-old woman and 22-year-old man, were in serious condition, police said.
Police said the woman in a blue 1994 Honda Accord was speeding in the east-bound lanes on Farrington Highway shortly after 2 a.m.
All the passengers were in the back seat, the man sitting on the left, the woman on the right and the baby between them, police said.
When the driver encountered a slight curve in the road near Milikami Street, she lost control of the car and it flipped onto its left side, police said. The car then slid into a utility pole, breaking the pole into two pieces, one of which fell onto the car, crushing it.
The baby was thrown onto the grass at the side of the road, police said.
The man was trapped inside the car and had to be extracted by Honolulu firefighters.
The woman in the back seat was able to crawl out, police said. The driver's air bag deployed.
The driver and all of the passengers were taken by ambulance to Wai'anae Comprehensive Health Center and then flown by helicopter to Queen's, all in critical condition with multiple injuries.
The passengers were later upgraded to serious condition, but the driver remained critical, police said.
Police noted that the skies were clear over the accident site and that Farrington Highway was dry. Police said they suspect alcohol was involved in the accident.
