Sun finishes second in NCAA backstroke

Stanford junior Hongzhe Sun of 'Ewa Beach finished second in the finals of the 200-yard backstroke yesterday at the NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships at Atlanta.
Ryan Lochte, a Florida senior, won in an NCAA and American record, 1 minute, 37.68 seconds. Sun finished in a career-best 1:40.25. It was Sun's highest finish in an NCAA meet.
California's Mark Eckert, an Iolani alum, finished 19th (1:45.74) and Hawai'i's Thomas Winkler 20th (1:45.76) in the 200 backstroke preliminaries and didn't make the finals.
Sun, an Iolani School alum, placed sixth in the 100 backstroke on Friday. (An incorrect event was reported in yesterday's Advertiser.)
UH diver Mats Wiktorsson finished fourth in the platform with 347.55 points. Auburn's Steven Segerlin won with 469.30.
Punahou alum Nick Borreca of Florida finished 18th in the 100 freestyle preliminaries in 43.52.
Stanford's Noa Sakamoto, an Punahou alum, finished 31st in the 1,650 freestyle in 16:04.74.
Auburn won the NCAA title with 480.5 points, followed by Arizona (440.5) and Stanford (362.5). Hawai'i was 30th (16).
