UH falls in MPSF title game

Third-seeded Stanford defeated No. 5 Hawai'i, 6-3, yesterday to capture the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Women's Water Polo Championship at Irvine, Calif.
The Rainbows are 17-10 and hoping to receive one of three at-large berths to the NCAA Championship at UC Davis from May 12 to 14. Stanford (22-4) received the league's automatic berth to the eight-team NCAA Championship.
In the first quarter, Kristy Bagnall and Iefke Van Belkum scored for UH, while Stanford got goals from Allison Gregorka and Katie Hansen.
The Cardinal took the lead on Lauren Silver's goal, but Kelly Mason tied it at 1:37 in the second quarter. Christina Hewko put the Cardinal up for good with 41 seconds to go in the second period, 4-3.
Silver scored in the third quarter and Nancy El-Sakkary added a goal early in the fourth.
Stanford's Meridith McColl had seven stops, shutting out the Rainbows in the second half.
SAILING
UH COED TEAM FINISHES FOURTH IN CLIPPER COVE
The University of Hawai'i coed sailing team finished fourth at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Yacht Racing Association Dinghy Championships yesterday in San Francisco's Clipper Cove.
Southern California scored 103 points, followed by Stanford (133), UC Irvine (137) and UH (143). USC and Stanford qualified for the Intercollegiate Sailing Association's Dinghy National Championship later this month in Charleston, S.C.
TWO FROM KANE'OHE NAMED TO U.S. TEAM
Danielle Brennan Myrdal and Molly O'Bryan, of Kane'ohe Yacht Club, have been named to the U.S. Sailing Team.
The national body annually recognizes the top five ranked teams in each of the 11 Olympic classes. O'Bryan sails in the 470 women's class with Florida's Alison Jolly, and Myrdal sails a Laser Radial.
Qualifying for the USST indicates that the athlete or team could be a serious contender to represent the United States at the next Olympic Games.
WHEELCHAIR TENNIS
MAUI ATHLETE CONTINUES STRONG PLAY IN EVENTS
Maui's Beth Arnoult-Ritthaler, the top-ranked women's wheelchair tennis player in the United States, reached the semifinals of two tournaments and quarterfinals of a third recently.
Arnoult fell to Esther Vergeer at both the Baton Rouge, La., and Pensacola, Fla., events. Vergeer, from the Netherlands, is the top-ranked women's wheelchair player in the world. Arnoult also reached the semifinals in both doubles draws. She was beaten in the quarterfinals at the Florida Open in Boca Raton.
Arnoult next plays at the World Team Cup in Brazil. She then has a tournament in Atlanta before going to Europe for five weeks this summer.
SURFING
'EWA BEACH'S CUIZON WINS CALIFORNIA CONTEST
Dustin Cuizon of 'Ewa Beach won the Body Glove Surfbout men's surfing contest on Saturday.
The final day of the week-long contest was completed in 2- to 4-foot waves at Lower Trestles, San Clemente, Calif.
Cuizon, 21, had a two-wave score of 16.14 in the final to win the $10,000 first prize. He scored a 9.17 (out of 10) in the early minutes of the heat and never lost the lead the rest of the way.
"I didn't really come here expecting to win," Cuizon said. "But I wanted to surf hard. I've surfed here a lot in the past, but I feel like I just got lucky and got some good ones."
The contest was part of surfing's World Qualifying Series. The top surfers from the WQS at the end of the year get called up to the elite World Championship Tour. It was Cuizon's first WQS victory.
Kekoa Bacalso of Mililani scored a perfect 10 in the quarterfinals, but was eliminated in the semifinals.

Services for Toshio "Bob" Nagatani, former University of Hawai'i academic and athletic benefactor and statistician, is Wednesday at Borthwick Mortuary, Mauka Chapel.
Viewing is 5 to 7 p.m. with services to follow.
Nagatani, 67, died April 27.
