Journalists speak without words

Sandra Pohl, owner of the Louis Pohl Gallery in Chinatown, likes themes for her art shows. She also likes to encourage people to be creative. She toyed with the notion of the writer as visual artist. The result is "Extra! Extra!," a show of work by 12 Advertiser staffers, who include copy editors and illustrators as well as reporters, on view through May 31.

"It was fascinating to see how it translates," said Pohl, who had Advertiser fashion writer Paula Rath organize the show (and whose fiber-art gown is a striking part of the exhibition).

Works include photographs by Island Life reporter Catherine Toth, ink drawings by political cartoonist Dick Adair and jewelry by city reporter Bev Creamer. Three-dot icon and crafts-mad Wayne Harada contributed detailed paper art of aloha shirts and hapi coats. Copy editor Lynne Chang pulls over on the sides of roads when she spots palm sheathes, which she varnishes and forms into organic-shaped containers.

Other artists in the lineup: food and book editor Wanda Adams, designers Martha Hernandez, Jon Orque and Gregory Taylor, photo technician Sachi Nakamura and copy editor Chris Oliver.

Louis Pohl Gallery is at 1111 Nu'uanu Ave., open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
