BYUH women in tennis nationals

The undefeated Brigham Young University-Hawai'i women's tennis team advanced to the NCAA Division II National Tournament with a 5-0, victory in the title match of the West Regional at La'ie yesterday.

The nationals are Wednesday to Saturday at Kansas City, Mo. The second-ranked Seasiders are 23-0.

The Seasiders will face Barry in the opening round on Wednesday.

The BYUH men's team also will play in the nationals beginning Wednesday.

BOWLING



SMITH, IZUMO WIN

Robert Smith of Captain Cook, Hawai'i, won his second tournament in a row last Friday in the Professional Bowlers Association West/ Northwest regional Hickam AFB Open.

Smith defeated Marv Sargent of Temecula, Calif., 236-205, to finish 7-0 at Hickam Bowling Center. Smith also won the Rice Shopping Center Open at Lihue, the first of the three Hawai'i PBA regional events.

Also, Darryl Izumo of Lihue, Kaua'i won the 28th annual Hawai'i Open at Schofield Bowling Center on Sunday.

Izumo defeated Vince Wood of Moreno Valley, Calif., in a 9-6 tie-breaker after finishing in a 255-all tie. Izumo was 7-1 in the tournament.

Smith and Izumo each won $2,000.

WAC TRACK & FIELD



VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT

The University of Hawai'i is hosting the WAC Track & Field Championships for the first time, Wednesday to Saturday at its rainbow track on Cooke Field. The school is looking for volunteers to help at the meet.

Twenty volunteers are needed the first two days. The final two days require up to 40 volunteers.

Jobs include raking jump pits, raising high jump and pole vault bars, measuring, setting up and removing hurdles and steeple chase barriers and escorting athletes off the track.

Volunteers will receive food, drinks, a T-shirt, and a great view of the action. Volunteers are needed all day (noon to 7 p.m.), but will be taken for shifts as short as 2 hours.

STAIR RACING



HYATT TO HOST RACE

The third annual "Hustle Up The Hyatt," a race among public safety members, will be held 1 a.m. Tuesday at the Hyatt Hotel in Waikiki.

The race up the stairs (41 flights) will feature competition among the Honolulu Police Department, Honolulu Fire Department, and the Emergency Medical Services.

About 20 participants in each city department will compete. The overall winner will receive an all-expenses-paid trip and entry fee to compete in the Empire State Building Run-Up in February.


VOLLEYBALL

SHOJI CAMPS SET

Applications are available for the four summer volleyball camps run by Rainbow Wahine coach Dave Shoji, his staff and players. Camps are open to boys and girls of all skill levels, entering grades 4 to 12.

Cost of each camp is $150. The final camp in August also offers dorm and meal service for an additional $400.

Camp dates are: June 19 to 22; July 14 to 17; July 18 to 21; and Aug. 1 to 4.
