A 20-year-old Kane'ohe Marine was killed early yesterday in a motorcycle accident on the Pali Highway.
Second Lt. Binford Strickland identified the man as Lance Cpl. Alberto Lopez.
"He was with Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, and was stationed here at Marine Corps Base Hawai'i," said Strickland. "Another member of the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marines, was present, riding his bike, and discovered the accident."
Strickland had no other details.
Police said the Marine was riding a 2004 Suzuki motorcycle toward Kailua, entering the hairpin turn on the Kailua side of the Pali tunnels when the motorcycle veered onto the right shoulder and hit a concrete barrier about 12:35 a.m..
Lopez, who was dead at the scene, was thrown from the bike and landed in a drainage culvert next to the side barrier.
Police said the weather was clear and the highway was dry. Lopez was wearing a helmet. Police said speed was a likely factor.
