Idaho prep pitcher says he's UH-bound

Right-handed pitcher Alex Capaul, a high school senior in Idaho, said he will sign a letter of intent to play baseball at the University of Hawai'i for the 2008 season.

Tomorrow is the first day baseball players may sign binding letters to play at NCAA programs. NCAA rules prohibit UH from commenting or even acknowledging its recruits. But the recruits are allowed to make statements of their decisions.

"I liked the campus, I liked the coaches, I liked the players," Capaul said by phone. "I liked everything about it."

Capaul, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound senior at Lake City High in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, said he also had offers from Utah, New Mexico, Gonzaga and NAIA Albertson College of Idaho. He added he had inquiries, but no offers, from Pepperdine and Washington State.

Capaul made a recruiting visit to UH during the weekend of Sept. 29 to Oct. 1.

He earned all-league first-team honors as a junior, according the Spokesman-Review newspaper, of Spokane, Wash. Capaul said UH coaches saw him in August during a showcase in Portland, Ore.
