WAILUKU, Maui — Maui Circuit Court Judge Joel August has set bail at $1 million each for three men charged in a murder-for-hire plot.

Ronald J. Bonilla, 60, of Pa'ia, Lawrence Verzosa, 42, of Wailuku, and Aniano B. Yabo, 40, of Lahaina, have been indicted for first-degree attempted murder, which carries a sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Bonilla and Verzosa also are charged with kidnapping, first-degree attempted extortion and second-degree robbery, while Bonilla additionally is facing two gun offenses and a charge of impersonating a law enforcement officer in the second degree.

All three are being held at the Maui Community Correctional Center.

Yabo is accused of paying Bonilla $3,550 to kill a 20-year-old man who was romantically involved with Yabo's estranged wife.

Bonilla and Verzosa allegedly kidnapped the victim Nov. 9 from the parking lot of the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua, where he works. The man was released when he offered his captors $100,000 to spare his life, police said.

Bonilla was arrested the next day after going to a meeting spot where he was supposed to pick up the money. Police said they found a loaded .357 Magnum snub-nosed revolver in his car along with a bail bondsman's badge.
