By Andrew Gomes

Hughes Development is modifying the project’s design to divide the complex into several buildings with varied roof heights to reduce obstruction of trade winds and views. The design could change further based on public input and other considerations.

A state agency pursuing redevelopment of public waterfront land diamondhead of Aloha Tower has named a community advisory group to help shape a private plan that includes building 300 condominiums at piers 5 and 6.

The Aloha Tower Development Corp., the agency charged to improve state waterfront property from piers 5 to 14 at Honolulu Harbor, has been working with Texas developer Ken Hughes of Hughes Development LP on the evolving plan.

Hughes in July received tentative approval for the project from the agency's board at a public meeting that drew mostly positive comments from a handful of residents.

Financial terms and other details would still need to be approved by the agency for the project to proceed.

The agency, which has been working with Hughes since 2002 when it selected his conceptual plan, decided to solicit outside input in part to avoid any surprise community reaction similar to one earlier this year that killed a project by another state agency to redevelop part of the Kaka'ako waterfront.
