Soldier slain in Iraq was Californian

Advertiser Staff

The Schofield Barracks soldier who died Tuesday in Iraq was identified as Staff Sgt. Daniel Isshak of Alta Loma, Calif.

The 25-year-old died in Tikrit from injuries he suffered during a firefight in Hawija, Iraq, the 25th Infantry Division said in a news release yesterday. Isshak was assigned to the 25th Infantry Division at Schofield Barracks in September 2005.

Isshak's family asked for privacy yesterday.

In July, 7,000 Schofield Barracks soldiers left for a one-year deployment to northern Iraq. Isshak is the fifth soldier to die in the mission, dubbed Task Force Lightning. The first to be killed, Missouri native Jeremy Shank, died Sept. 6 after a firefight in Hawija.

The Schofield soldiers are stationed in several spots, including Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit, a base south of Mosul, the oil-producing city of Kirkuk, and Hawija, about 30 miles to the southwest.
