Three Twisters selected to gymnastics national teams

Three members of the Hawaiian Island Twisters Gymnastics Team have been selected to the TOPs National Team.

They are Kiana Paltin, 9, Cierra Lauro, 10, and Jasmine Pade-ken-Pasigan, 11.

TOPs, or Talent Opportunity Program, helps to identify the country's top 9-, 10- and 11-year-old female gymnasts. The testing was Sept. 21 and 22, at the USA Gymnastics' Women's National Team Training Center in Huntsville, Texas.

The testing included pullups, leg lifts, flexibility, sprint, rope climb, vertical jump, pushups and press handstands as well as on the vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise.

The TOPs National Team members were invited to attend a training camps in December at the National Training Center.

The three Honolulu gymnasts are coached by Joe Rapp, Jamey Gosset and Lori Yee.

KONG ENTERS HALL

Buck Sam Kong, a former Hawai'i resident now living in Los Angeles, will be inducted into the Martial Arts History Museum's Hall of Fame tomorrow in Canoga Park, Calif.

Kong, a Hung Gar Kung Fu expert, is one of five martial arts pioneers to be inducted. The others are Ark Y. Wong, Wen Mei Yu, Wally Jay and Toshishiro Obata.

He established the Siu Lum Pai Association in Kalihi in 1963. The association now has four branches on O'ahu.
