BYU-Hawai'i sweeps UH-Hilo in PacWest volleyball

Rosanne Vea had a career-high 14 kills and hit .480 as No. 9 Brigham Young-Hawai'i swept Hawai'i-Hilo, 30-26, 30-14, 30-23, yesterday in a Pacific West Conference women's volleyball match at La'ie.
Noelle Filimoeatu added 13 kills and 19 digs, Michelle Peters had 13 kills and 15 digs, LeeAnn Mapu contributed 52 assists and 17 digs, and Christina Bobik had 10 kills in a balanced attack that boosted the Seasiders' record to 16-0 overall and 12-0 in the PacWest.
Taina Savage led the Vulcans (5-13, 3-6) with nine kills and 20 digs.
Hilo started the match strong, racing to a 15-10 lead before the Seasiders rallied to tie it at 17. BYUH took the lead for good at 21-20 on a kill by Filimoeatu.
The Seasiders dominated the second game as they stormed to a 20-10 lead. Hilo scored four in a row, but BYUH responded by scoring the last 10 points of the game.
The Vulcans took an early lead in the third game before an 8-2 run lifted the Seasiders from a 17-14 deficit to a 22-19 lead.

UH MEN WIN TOURNEY
The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team defeated the University of British Columbia, 17-25, 19-25, 25-18, 25-22, 15-12, last night to win the championship of the host's tournament at Vancouver, B.C.
UH setter Brian Beckwith and outside hitter Steve Grgas were named to the all-tournament team.

BYUH EDGES HPU, 1-0
Emily Mearns scored in the 66th minute as Brigham Young-Hawai'i beat Hawai'i Pacific, 1-0, yesterday in a Pacific West Conference women's soccer match at La'ie.
Mearns took a pass from Jessica Nibley and shot the ball into the lower left corner of the goal from about 25 yards, helping the Seasiders improve to 8-3 overall and 4-1 in the PacWest.
The Sea Warriors fell to 3-6 and 1-4.
BYUH, HPU SCORELESS
Brigham Young-Hawai'i and Hawai'i Pacific played to a 0-0 tie yesterday in a Pacific West Conference men's soccer match at La'ie.
The Seasiders (5-4-1 overall, 3-2-1 PacWest) took eight shots on goal while the Sea Warriors (6-5-2, 1-3-2) took five shots on goal through regulation and two overtime periods.

FUJIKAWA LEADS BY ONE
Moanalua High sophomore Tadd Fujikawa shot a 3-under-par 69 yesterday to take a one-stroke lead in the Turtle Bay Amateur.
Travis Toyama is alone in second, followed by Alex Ching and Pierre-Henri Soero at 71.
Rodney Doo (76) leads A flight by two strokes, Leighton Uyeda (76) leads B flight by two strokes and Hal Takahashi (82) leads C flight by three strokes. Also in B flight, 84-year-old Willie Perreira shot an 82 to tie for 17th.
The final round will be played today at the resort's George Fazio course.
CROSS COUNTRY
UH FINISHES 11TH
The University of Hawai'i women's cross country team finished 11th in the 13-team Santa Clara Invitational yesterday at Sunnyvale, Calif.
Junior Chantelle Laan led UH, placing 15th in the field of more than 130 runners with a personal-best 18-minute, 8-second time in the 5-kilometer race.
Stanford scored a low-best 68 points. UH had 285.
HILO, BYUH PREVAIL
The Hawai'i-Hilo women and the Brigham Young-Hawai'i men captured team titles yesterday at the Hawai'i Pacific Invitational in Kane'ohe.
The Vulcans — led by a third-place finish by Kari Andrew (27 minutes, 25 seconds) in the 6-kilometer race — scored a low-best 32 points. BYUH (41) was second and HPU (55) third. HPU's Inga Burger won the race in 26:48.
The Seasiders — paced by a fifth-place finish by Jacob Puzey (30:25) in the 10-kilometer race — scored 38 points to edge Hilo (40) and HPU (50). HPU's Todd Iacovelli won in 29:38.

Brigham Young-Hawai'i's Julia Ustyuzhanina defeated Lynn University's Alexandra Schunk, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2, yesterday to finish third in the Wilson/ITA Small College Championships at Fort Myers, Fla.
WINTER BASEBALL
BEACHBOYS BEAT SHARKS
Mark Minicozzi hit a two-run homer in the eighth and five pitchers teamed on a five-hitter as the Waikiki BeachBoys beat the Honolulu Sharks, 4-1, last night in a Hawaii Winter Baseball game at Les Murakami Stadium.
Dexter Fowler, Reed Eastley and Ian Desmond each had two hits for the BeachBoys. Fowler's RBI single gave Waikiki a 1-0 lead in the first and Eastley's RBI double made it 2-1 in the sixth.
David Quinowski (2-0) pitched a perfect sixth to earn the victory and Andrew Johnston pitched a perfect eighth and ninth to record the save.
