Hawai'i surfers in contention

All 10 Hawai'i competitors remained in contention, including five who are undefeated, after the third day of the ISA World Surfing Games yesterday.
The third day of the seven-day event was completed in 1- to 3-foot waves at Huntington Beach, Calif.
Hawai'i competitors Gavin Gillette, Bethany Hamilton, Lani Hunter, Chasity Baltazar and Bonga Perkins are undefeated in their respective divisions.
Gillette advanced to the fifth round of the open men's division; Hamilton and Hunter advanced to the third round of the open women's division; Baltazar advanced to the second round of the women's bodyboarding division; Perkins advanced to the fourth round of the longboard surfing division.
Five other Hawai'i competitors — Alex Smith, Shane Valiere and Sebastian Zietz in the open men's division, and David Hubbard and Travis Smith in the men's bodyboarding division — dropped into the repechage heats.
More than 300 surfers representing 33 countries are competing in the event. Hawai'i is recognized as its own country for the contest.

CHAMINADE SWEEPS
Brittnee Fonnesbeck had 14 kills and Vanja Radanovic had 11 as Chaminade beat Grand Canyon, 30-19, 30-27, 30-19, yesterday in a Pacific West Conference women's match at Phoenix, Ariz.
Chaminade is 14-4 overall and 9-2 in PacWest.
