Orchids throughout time have mystified and lured people with their unique beauty. Once very expensive, orchids were only affordable to the affluent. Today, thanks to mericloning or micro-propagation, orchid can fit everyone's budget.

In Hawai'i, it seems as if anyone can grow orchids. Many acquire their first orchid as a gift. After enjoying the beautiful flowers, many would "jus' put da buggah outside," not really knowing what to do with it but not wanting to throw it away. The orchid would often end up under the eaves of the house or be put under a tree next to other plants. A few months later almost by accident, "Aiya, da buggah stay bloom again"!

We are so fortunate to live in a climate that is suitable for most orchids. Maybe it is the reason why we have so many orchid clubs here: On O'ahu, there are 15 clubs; throughout the state, a total of 21. It seems as if every community has one (see chart).

Many of these orchid clubs will come together this weekend to display their prize-winning plants in the state's biggest orchid event — the annual Great Hawaiian Orchid Show at Blaisdell Center.

Not only will there be orchids on view, but there will be a huge orchid and plant sale. There will also be a full slate of talented speakers for the educational program.

If you have questions about orchids, this is the place to bring them.

It's impossible to learn everything you need in one session; you may want to call upon your local orchid society for help. This is why they exist but, they are also a great way to meet others and, of course, to build your own collection.

Most have a nominal annual fee, but for the amount of orchids you receive, the great fellowship, and, of course, good food, it is truly one of the best deals in town.
