MILILANI—Quarterback Mason Koa rushed for two touchdowns and passed for two to lift Kapolei over Kailua, 35-14, last night in first-round action of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red tournament at Mililani stadium.

"We made history today," Koa said. "It's the first time we're going into the second game of the playoffs."

It was the Hurricanes' first postseason win since joining the Red in 2004. They get to play at East top-seed and defending league and state champion Kahuku Saturday night in the quarterfinals.

"It's the toughest place to play on this whole island," Kapolei coach Darren Hernandez said. "I think in the long run, it's going to help our program. You can play Kahuku at Kahuku, you can play anybody anywhere."

Last year, Kahuku eliminated the Hurricanes, 47-7, in the quarterfinals. Kapolei had a first-round bye last year.

Koa rushed for 89 yards and passed for 155 more. Two of his longest gains — 41 and 30 yards — were to wideout Caleb Spencer, who said he is related to the Nevada receiver and Kamehameha graduate of the same name. Spencer also wears No. 87.

The Hurricanes (4-5), the West's fifth seed, jumped on the Surfriders (4-5), the East's sixth seed, by scoring on four consecutive series after punting on their first possession.

Koa set the tone with a keeper to the left for a 60-yard run to the Kailua 3. Koa then kept again, this time going right, to score. Curtis Kiyabu's PAT made it 7-0 with 4:15 left in the first quarter.

On Kapolei's next series, Koa showed off his throwing with a 12-yard TD pass to Kiyabu, whose PAT made it 14-0 with 13 seconds left in the first quarter.

Koa connected on a 47-yard pass play to Spencer that helped set up running back Kamuela Foki's 1-yard TD run to make it 21-0 with 8:11 left in the half.

Kailua fumbled the ensuing kickoff at its 14, where Koa scored on a keeper to make it 28-0 just 13 seconds later.

The Hurricanes ignited the running clock (35-point differential mercy rule) with 8:03 left in the third quarter when they scored on a 6-yard pass from Koa to Spencer. The series was set up by an interception by Keli'i Aki.

But Kailua wasn't ready to pack it in. After 12:44 of running time, the Surfriders scored with 7:19 left in the game on a 1-yard run by running back Keelan Gonda. Zachary Akamine connected with Traves Holeso-Wolfe for the 2-point conversion to make it 35-8.

Kailua scored on its next series when Akamine hit Darren Sugimoto on a 33-yard TD pass with 2:54 left. The Surfriders failed on the 2-point try, as well as on the ensuing onside kick.

But it wasn't a matter of starting too late for Kailua.

"We were never in this game at all from the very beginning," Kailua coach Gary Rosolowich said. "I guess we just weren't prepared. We came out flat. Things got out of hand and some days it's just that way."

In other OIA Red quarterfinals next week, 'Aiea will travel to Wai'anae and Mililani will host Farrington. Both games are on Friday. In the other Saturday quarterfinal, McKinley will play Leilehua at Mililani in a televised game.

In the White semifinals, Kaimuki will play at Kaiser on Friday and Waialua will visit Waipahu on Saturday.
