HALAWA — After a two-year absence from the postseason, No. 1 Saint Louis crushed No. 10 Damien, 44-0, last night to clinch the Interscholastic League of Honolulu title and earn its first berth in the state tournament since 2003.
"We were awesome," said a drenched Crusaders' head coach Delbert Tengan of his offense after getting doused in celebration. "I thought our guys were clicking. The offensive line was blocking well, we were running the ball well, and Micah (Mamiya) was hitting his receivers."
In front of an Aloha Stadium crowd of 3,974, Mamiya, a junior quarterback, completed 6 of 7 passes for 164 yards and four scores, two of which were to Shane Ahlo, who finished with three catches for 98 yards.
The Saints wasted little time, scoring on their first possession, a four-play, 73-yard drive capped by a 21-yard TD pass from Mamiya to Ahlo.
Saint Louis scored again on its next drive on a 25-yard completion from Mamiya to Billy Stutzmann. Kenton Chun's extra point made it 14-0. The Crusaders added a 25-yard field goal by Chun to close the first-quarter scoring.
A 27-point second quarter was highlighted by defensive end Scott Smith's 35-yard interception return. Smith, a 6-foot-7 senior, tipped George Martin's swing pass intended for running back Kama Bailey to himself and took it back for the final score of the first half.
Saint Louis scored on all seven of its first-half possessions.
"I just feel really happy for our seniors," Tengan said. "Last year we got so close, and we felt the pain and disappointment of not winning the ILH championship. I think we've learned a lot since then, and we used that experience from last year to drive us for the ILH championship this year."
Following a Saint Louis streak of 18 consecutive ILH titles, Kamehameha won the league crown in 2004 en route to a state championship, and Punahou edged the Saints last year in the ILH.
