MAN FOR ALL SEASONS: Local boy Christopher Kale Jones will play Frankie Valli in the national tour of the Tony Award-winning musical, "Jersey Boys," now in rehearsals in New York. A preview run begins Dec. 1, with a Dec. 10 launch at the Curran Theatre in San Francisco.
Jones was born and raised in Hawai'i, graduating from Hawai'i Baptist Academy and Northwestern University, and he has Island theatrical credits, appearing in Army Community Theatre's "Grease" (as Danny Zuko) and "West Side Story" and in the Castle Performing Arts Company's "Once on This Island" during the Ronald Bright tenure. He also has Mainland stage credits, including "Miss Saigon" (playing Chris) for the Worcester Foothills Stages. His proud parents still live in Kailua.
As Valli, Jones gets to sing a cachet of Four Seasons goldies, including "Big Girls Don't Cry," "Sherry," "Can't Take My Eyes Off You," and "Oh, What a Night." The iconic quartet also features Erich Bergen, Michael Ingersoll and Deven May. The show then moves to Los Angeles' Ahmanson Theatre for a June 3 debut and heads for Chicago's LaSalle Bank Theatre in October. Alas, Honolulu has never had a national tour here — and there's little hope this might play here. ...
ITEMIZATIONS: Jason Tam, a Hawai'i native, is earning praise for his portrayal of Paul San Marco in the Broadway revival of "A Chorus Line." His parents, Jim and Linda Tam, attended the opening this month — and were understandably thrilled. ...
Local girl Aubrey Lee Glover saw Tam in a recent New York trek and spent three days with him and Katherine Mills; the latter is studying musical theater at New York University and has been in NYU's "Once on This Island" and "Bye Bye Birdie." Tam helped the pair score tickets to "Chorus"; Glover was floored to see his bigger-than-life image on buses and billboards. ...
Romano's Macaroni Grill will lose its popular waiter-singer, Colin Miyamoto ("M. Butterfly"), who relocates to New York in mid-November to pursue a theatrical career. He got pointers from former New Yorkers Rex Nockengust, Gene Allen and Steve Harmon at dinner one night — including Big Apple survival tips such as where to score an apartment. ...
HITHER 'N' YON: Alvin Okami, the entertainer-turned-'ukulele maker, is on cloud nine. CNBC's "On the Money" show, with host Mike Hegedus, visited Okami's KoAloha 'Ukulele plant in Kapalama three weeks ago, and the show debuted last Wednesday, with interviews of Papa Okami and sons Alan and Paul. "It was awesome," Okami said of the coverage. "Should really help our business." One regret: wife Patricia did not get camera time. With showings in Asia and Europe, KoAloha had better up uke production. ...
"Set the Dog Free," a tune by University Lab School grad Matt Glickstein, is available on iTunes, with portions of the proceeds supporting Duane "Dog" Chapman's legal defense fund. He hopes the efforts will "go a long way in helping to set the Dog free," Glickstein said of the impending Mexican extradition request. ...
SIGHT 'EMS: Lisa Marie Presley is among the first to reserve the new private room at Ruth's Chris Steak House at The Shops at Mauna Lani. She and friends dined in the Kilohana Room last week. The room got its Hawaiian name from Daniel Akaka Jr., son of the senator, who blessed the restaurant for owner Randy Schoch (not the senator, as earlier mentioned, who was in Honolulu and ready to brunch after the Oct. 15 earthquake). ...
Jo Frost of ABC's "Supernanny" filmed several scenes recently at Tiki's Grill & Bar in Waikiki. Comedian Sinbad, in town for a Blaisdell Concert Hall show, hung out at the Tiki bar later in the evening. Frost and pals also took in the Sinbad performance. And yep, that was Sinbad breakfasting at Sam Choy's Breakfast, Lunch & Crab with Laugh Factory's Jon Schneider and Larry Schmaus from LL Hawai'i Tours. ...
