Man sought in son's death

Honolulu police and state sheriffs are looking for a man indicted Wednesday for allegedly smothering his infant son last year.

An O'ahu grand jury indicted 50-year-old Lionel Letoto on a second-degree murder charge for allegedly suffocating 3-month-old Noah Williams with pillows and a comforter on Nov. 6, 2005.

Letoto is the child's father, police said. He originally told police and his girlfriend, the child's mother, that he fell asleep and woke to find the baby unresponsive.

An autopsy revealed the baby died of asphyxiation after being suffocated, according to the city Medical Examiner's Office, and the subsequent investigation led to the indictment.

Letoto's bail was set at $100,000.

He has two prior convictions for violating a temporary restraining order in October 2001 and for contempt of court in December 1976.

Noah's mother was at work when he died and Letoto was the only person home with the child, police said.

The result of Noah's autopsy was deferred at the time of his death and police did not receive the results until early this summer, police said.

Detectives re-interviewed Letoto after learning Noah had died of asphyxiation.
