More than 3,000 animals and their humans are expected to gather at Magic Island for the Hawaiian Humane Society's PetWalk, on Oct. 8.
Pet owners put on their walking shoes, grab the leash, pack up the pooch and head for the biggest pet social of the year. It's not just dogs that turn out but animals of all colors including birds, cats, rodents and even turtles.
Don't have a dog? The Humane Society's pledged-based fund-raiser is open to everyone — kama'aina and visitors are welcome whether they have a pet or not.
The 2-mile course runs through Magic Island and Ala Moana Beach Park. Supporters drop off their pledges at 7 a.m., and the walk begins at 8 a.m. PetWalk 2006 also will feature a mini-course for short-legged pets, refreshments for humans and animals.
Hawaiian Telcom and Central Pacific Bank are sponsoring the event with a $5,000 donation in support of their employees' pledge-raising efforts.
"We're calling on all animal-lovers — with or without pets — to join us in supporting the Hawaiian Humane Society's PetWalk," said Joel Matsunaga, vice president of external affairs for Hawaiian Telcom. "Hawaiian Telcom strongly believes in strengthening connections and supporting our communities, and we look forward to doing both on Oct. 8."
Donations help protect animals from abuse, place homeless animals with families, teach children about kindness and compassion for animals, and support other Humane Society programs.
"The Hawaiian Humane Society helps to provide lifelong security for animals, and by participating in PetWalk, we are committed to supporting the organization's efforts," said Beth Greenhill, Central Pacific Bank's community events officer. "We encourage all residents to come out and join Alex, our Loyalty Officer, to bank on success for this year's event."
Highlights include pet games and a pet costume contest. Whatever the costume, have your pet make a statement. All contestants may enter the parade.
Pledge forms are available online at www.hawaiianhumane.org and at select O'ahu locations: the Hawaiian Humane Society, many local pet stores and veterinary clinics. Information: 946-2187, ext. 225.
