HONORABLE MENTIONS: Jordan Segundo, Hawai'i's first "American Idol" contestant and overall nice guy, recently won the 2007 Ola Pono Award for his ongoing contributions to the community, particularly his efforts to promote a safe, drug-free lifestyle. As spokesperson for Adult Friends for Youth, Segundo has been working with students of all ages across the state, doing inspirational talks at schools. He also has been a supporter of DARE, appears at school career-days and regularly participates in read-aloud sessions. The Ola Pono Award — $1,000 — enables Segundo to donate it to the charity of his choice, and he has selected Adult Friends for Youth. ...
Lifelong hula enthusiast and cultural ambassador Kau'i Brandt, who teaches hula and lei-making at Disney World's Polynesian Resort, will receive the Duke's Ho'okahiko Award in a ceremony from 3 to 4:30 p.m. April 18 at Duke's Waikiki at the Outrigger Waikiki. The award honors individuals who exemplify the finest traditions of Hawai'i. ...
TRADE WINDS: Keali'i Reichel will don his kumu hula and chanter hat for yet another "Art of the Chanter" session, slated for May 5 at Mamiya Theatre on the Saint Louis-Chaminade University campus. Chanters from across the state will present works dating to the 1800s, when they were featured in Hawaiian language newspapers. Reichel was on the Big Island recently, huddling with Pualani Kanahele and others about the chant fest. ...
"Urinetown" opens Friday (playing at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays; and 2 p.m. Sundays, through April 29) at the Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu.

Diamond Head Theatre's "Sweet Charity," led by Kristin Ing as Charity Hope Valentine, offers big splendor — with spirit to spare. The dance numbers are fun, featuring agile, tireless hostesses played by Ahnya Chang, Kathryn Mariko Lee and Tricia Marciel. The show is a tad dated, but loaded with great songs. ...
AROUND 'N' ABOUT: Shawna Masuda packed winter clothes for her trek to Madison, Wis., to sing Kim in a concert version of "Miss Saigon." Before departing, she learned that she got the role of Sandy in Army Community Theatre's production of "Grease," which kicks off May 10 at Richardson Theatre. ...
Designer Maggie Coulombe of Maui is still reeling in post-Oscar, apres-Golden Globes delight, since celebs have been donning her creations. Lani Misalucha, the Filipina songbird, has returned to the Society of Seven show at the Flamingo hotel. She was in the Philippines to promote a new solo album. NICE GESTURE: Ex-columnist Eddie Sherman donated his first royalty check — $1,400 — from his Watermark book, "Frank, Sammy, Marlon & Me," to the Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific. He plans to divert future checks to REHAB, too. ...
